Spain-Based Team Hoping To Join F1 In '21
Pascal Wehrlein

A "would-be" Spain-based F1 team said on Thursday that it was "planning an entry under new regulations" from '21, with former F1 driver Pascal Wehrlein as part of the "prospective lineup."

Monaco-based MIM Group, linked to Adrian Campos' Campos Racing Team, which competes in Formula Two and Formula Three, said in a statement that it "had a team of former F1 engineers working on a preliminary study."

The statement mentioned meetings in May and July with F1 Chair Chase Carey and Managing Dir Ross Brawn. The three new teams that entered F1 in '10, "when a budget cap was proposed but never happened," are now defunct. REUTERS

F1 said in a statement, "Following publicity in recent days from several entities that have indicated their ambition to participate in the FIA Formula One World Championship from 2021, while Formula 1 appreciates their interest, we can confirm that there are no serious discussions with any persons or companies about the admission of a new team" (F1).

Campos "has been involved in F1 projects before, most recently as the driving force" behind the entry that became Hispania (HRT) when he sold it before its F1 debut in '10. FIA President Jean Todt recently said that the teams that have expressed interest in joining F1 in '21 were not at the same "level" Haas was prior to joining the F1 grid in '16. MOTORSPORT
